Why Strength Training?

Everyone will experience different short and long term benefits from regular strength training. Mental and physical benefits of strength training include*:

  • Improved muscle strength and tone – to protect your joints from injury.

  • Maintaining flexibility and balance, which can help you remain independent as you age.

  • Weight management and increased muscle-to-fat ratio – as you gain muscle, your body burns more kilojoules when at rest.

  • May help reduce or prevent cognitive decline in older people.

  • Greater stamina – as you grow stronger, you won’t get tired as easily.

  • Prevention or control of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, back pain, depression and obesity.

  • Pain management.

  • Improved mobility and balance.

  • Improved posture.

  • Decreased risk of injury.

  • Increased bone density and strength and reduced risk of osteoporosis.

  • Improved sense of wellbeing – resistance training may boost your self-confidence, and improve your body image and your mood.

  • Improved sleep and avoidance of insomnia.

  • Increased self-esteem.

  • Enhanced performance of everyday tasks.

It is important to also highlight the day to day benefits of being strong. We like to call these ‘Everyday Strength Wins’ in our community. It is always exciting to hear about the daily wins we can achieve by being stronger. For example, being able to lift your suitcase with ease, standing on the train without using the handles or perhaps lifting your groceries or a heavy box in and out your car easily.

Or perhaps strength training enables you to do things you never thought possible like hiking or riding your bike up a hill or the confidence to try a new sport or activity like circus!

Strength training also allows us to care for our body and mind. Strength training requires you to be present and mindful while lifting and can be an important activity to take time out of our busy schedules to look after ourselves. At Everyday Strength we have a strong focus on form and lifting technique. We also talk about listening to your body and adjusting your program when needed.
